When you start looking at lighting your first through is what do I need to keep my animals alive? This all depends on what you want to keep. If you are setting up a Reef Aquarium, and you wish to keep light loving coral than the brightest, most powerful lighting is for you. That said you can create a realistic reef set-up with coral requiring lower levels of lighting. And a fish only system requires only enough light to see by.
